Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in television shows as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. However, her parents didn't want her to pursue acting until she became an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry states that she did not want to perform in high school, but she decided to begin acting as a social activity during her time at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then brought Perry back to California, where theater jobs were available. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was performed at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played nine roles in the ABC film The Family, in 2016. Her father played her on the ABC show Scandal. The same year, she portrayed a child character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a younger version. She got the part through an open audition despite having a connection to the character.
